Jungle Lodges ~ pleasure in pathless woods

I think I am in love with last minute travel plans. One day you are frowning over an overly planned trip gone sour and the next you are on an exotic island miles away from home. Last week I was suppossed to be trekking to the valley of flowers in Uttrakand, instead was introduced to the concept of Jungle Lodges present in our very own backyard.

The government of Karnataka, a couple of decades ago set up jungle lodges, in a bid to introduce eco tourism. The surprising bit being, these lodges came into exsistense when eco tourism was not as fashionable as it is today. This directional thinking however has given us 14 absolutely spectacular jungle lodges spread across Karnataka. Each of which is located in a different forest range and have their own geographical tales to tell.

Thanks to an impromptu plan, a few hurried phone calls later I found myself in Devbhag along with a small tour party. A small island located off Karwar. A ferry dropped us off to the island. The only reason we secured a booking was because of the monsoons is what we were told. Else, these lodges get booked out at least three months in advance. For me however this was an ideal time to be in Devbhag. There was no rush, no clutter hence a perfect setting to vegetate.

The property is loosely guarded and is dotted with cottages amid the rain forest. The cottages resembles the homes of the locals and is basic in nature. But it is sufficient, clean and the view is that of the vast sandy beach curtained by the tress. The island also houses a small picturesque fishermen village and a guided tour of the village is arranged as a part of the island activity. We however skipped this as it is belittling to view people living their everyday life as if it were a phenomenon.  We were promised jet skiing and other water sports too, but the consistent downpour disrupted the plans. Not that any of this mattered because just being their was engulfing enough.

How to Reach: Book a Bangalore-Karwar bus and get off near the Devi temple stop once you reach Karwar. Very close to the temple the Jungle Resort office is located. The friendly folks at the office will guide you to the ferry and take you to your cottage.
